How to Activate Your Glutes Before Every Workout (2-Minute Routine)

2026-07-10

Ever finish a leg day and feel it everywhere except your glutes? That’s the frustrating reality of “sleepy glutes” — muscles that stay switched off while your quads and lower back do all the heavy lifting. The fix takes two minutes and turns your booty workout from “meh” into “oh, there they are.” Let’s wake them up.

Why Glute Activation Matters

Thanks to long hours of sitting, many of us have glutes that are, frankly, a bit lazy. When they don’t fire properly, other muscles compensate — which means smaller results and a grumpy lower back. A quick activation routine “reminds” your glutes to engage before you train, so they actually do the work they’re built for. More results, better form, fewer aches. Two minutes very well spent.

Why glute activation makes every rep count

The 2-Minute Activation Routine

Do these right before your leg or booty workout. A light resistance band makes them even better, but bodyweight works great too.

1. Glute Bridges

Lie on your back, feet flat, and drive your hips up by squeezing your glutes at the top. This is the classic wake-up call. Do 15 slow reps and really feel the squeeze.

2. Banded Clamshells

On your side, knees bent, open your top knee against a band. You’ll feel the side of your glutes light up fast. 15 each side.

3. Banded Lateral Walks

Band around your knees or ankles, sink into a slight squat, and step sideways. 10 steps each way — your glutes will be very awake now.

4. Fire Hydrants

On all fours, lift one bent knee out to the side. A little silly-looking, extremely effective. 12 each side.

How to Know It’s Working

The whole goal is the mind-muscle connection — you should genuinely feel your glutes engaging. When you move on to your main lifts, focus on squeezing your glutes through each rep. Suddenly your squats and hip thrusts hit exactly where they’re supposed to. That’s the magic of activation.

Bottom Line

Two minutes of glute activation — bridges, clamshells, lateral walks, and fire hydrants — before your workout means your glutes actually show up and do the work. Better results, better form, happier lower back. Don’t skip the wake-up call; your future self (and your glutes) will thank you. Now go squeeze.
