Why Tight Glutes Cause Trouble

Tense glutes tug on the pelvis and lower back and can even irritate the sciatic nerve. That mysterious back ache after leg day - often glutes. Stretching them is back-pain prevention in disguise.

Lying down, cross ankle over opposite knee and pull the supporting thigh toward you. It targets the deep rotators where tension hides. Thirty to sixty seconds each side, breathing into it.

From all fours, slide one knee forward and settle the hips down. It’s the deepest glute stretch there is - support with a cushion as needed. Slow entries and exits, always.

Seated Twist and Cross-Leg Lean

Desk workers: cross a leg, hug the knee, twist gently, then lean forward over the crossed leg. You can do this in an office chair. Your glutes don’t care where the relief comes from.

When to Stretch Them

Post-workout and evenings are prime time, when muscles are warm. After leg day, two minutes of glute stretching noticeably softens next-day soreness. Make it a standing appointment.

Strong glutes need soft edges - stretch them after training and long sitting days, and your back, hips and next-day soreness all improve. Figure-four daily, pigeon when you’re warm, seated twists at your desk. Your backside works hard; let it exhale.
